Ferry Sunset in India, 105 killed

New Delhi, A ferry carrying 350 passengers divided into two and sank in a river in India. A total of 105 people were killed and 100 others were missing.


"The rescuers worked together successfully with the community to find 105 bodies in the river banks," said Dhubri district police chief, PC Haloi, told the news agency AFP on Tuesday (05/01/2012).


"While the fate of some 100 others not yet known," he added.


While about 150 others managed to survive, saved by the officer and who managed to escape by swimming to the river banks.


Rescue teams, including the military, continue to sacrifice the look still missing. But unfortunately, bad weather, their efforts and the dark night conditions is hindered.


Time of the incident, this story is a ferry across the river Brahmaputra in Assam, Guwahati was located. The ferry leaves from Dhubri region and pass around Fakirganj. Because of the storm, the ship split in two and sunk, on Monday (30/4) evening local time.


Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was surprised and saddened and called the incident a tragedy. He made sure that the rescue work and the search for survivors would be thorough.


"The guarantee any support for the government of Assam in the rescue and support of the National Foundation of the Prime Minister for the whole family of the victim," he said.


It is known that the water transport ferries are used most frequently in rural areas of India. But unfortunately, accidents involving these vessels occur frequently because of lack of safety standards and frequency of excess passengers and freight.
